Denver could turn empty school into migrant shelter – as suburb struggles with Venezuelan gangs – DNyuz

Denver officials are considering converting a vacant elementary school building into a migrant shelter, as a nearby suburb struggles with Venezuelan gangs.

“The location you referenced has been looked at as a possible location to provide temporary housing for new arrivals,” Jon Ewing, a spokesman for Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, told Fox News on Friday. “No decisions have been made and no contracts have been signed.”

The shrine city has a population of over 700,000.

Concerns are growing in the Denver area after numerous reports that the nearby community of Aurora is having problems with Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang.

A video released last month shows men with guns knocking on the door of an apartment in Aurora, which is believed to be evidence that Tren de Aragua has taken over the building.

Since then, conflicting reports have circulated as to whether the gang is actually present in the city.

Aurora police have said the gang is active in the city, but the group is not large and has not taken over any apartment complexes.

Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman initially said “criminal elements” had taken over a number of buildings and were extorting residents.

He then backtracked, saying he was “not sure where the truth was in all this” after local residents held a press conference to say the gangs had not taken over.

President Donald Trump has stoked the rumors in Aurora by claiming the gangs are “taking over the whole city.”
