The one-off performance took place at the Estádio MorumBIS in São Paulo on Saturday, September 7. It follows on from the singer – real name Abel Tesfaye – who spent the last two years on his ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’, and marked the beginning of a new musical era.

Ahead of the performance, the singer revealed that it would be different from his previous performances and would feature a mixed setlist and a “never-before-seen production”. Tesfaye also joined forces with the UN World Food Programme for the concert, donating $1 (77p) from every ticket sold to the XO Humanitarian Fund in a bid to end global famine.

In front of an arena crowd of approximately 75,000 and millions more watching the livestream, The Weeknd performed a setlist of his greatest hits and debuted eight new songs from his upcoming album ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ during the massive performance.

It follows months of new music announcements from the artist, starting when he hinted that the upcoming third chapter of his ongoing ‘After Hours’ and ‘Dawn FM’ series was on the way in a series of social media posts in January. Since then, he’s shared snippets of new tracks throughout the year, finally revealing the album’s title, ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’, earlier this week.

Weeping in the new era, The Weeknd debuted two new songs at the start of the show. While he didn’t reveal song titles, fans online have dubbed them “Fades to Black/Run Away” and “Wake Me Up.”

He then performed a series of hits from his 2020 album ‘After Hours’, including the title track, ‘Too Late’ and ‘Escape from LA’, before introducing special guest Playboi Carti to perform ‘FE!N’ (a Travis Scott cover), ‘Until I Bleed Out’ and ‘TIMELESS’.

Brazilian artist Anitta also dropped by to perform another unreleased track, believed to be called “São Paulo.” Other unreleased tracks that made their debut were “Wake Me Up,” “Take Me Back to LA,” “Dancing in the Flames,” “Let’s End It All,” “Run Away,” and the album’s presumed title track, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” which he left on.

Elsewhere, he performed his biggest hits, including ‘Save Your Tears’, ‘Less Than Zero’ and ‘Blinding Lights’, which recently became the first song in history to reach 4 billion streams on Spotify. It is now Spotify’s most-streamed song of all time.

The final addition to the trilogy will be The Weeknd’s first album since 2022’s ‘Dawn FM’. In a four-star review, NME wrote: “’Dawn FM’ feels like the first steps on a journey for The Weeknd to find peace with himself; perhaps the next time we hear from him, he’ll fully embrace the light of day.”

In other news, it was reported earlier this year that The Weeknd’s massive hit single ‘Blinding Lights’ became the first song in history to reach 4 billion streams on Spotify. The track, which Spotify named the most-streamed song of all time, was featured on his album ‘After Hours’, which was released in late 2019.
