A high school student accused of creating deepfakes depicting the sexual exploitation of classmates complained of dishonesty, saying, “I’m misunderstood.”

On December 6, SBS’s “Curious Story Y” published an interview with A, a high school student who produced and distributed deepfake sexual exploitation material, and his father.

According to the report, 18-year-old A was arrested for producing and distributing deepfake images of sexual exploitation of classmates in elementary and middle school (complicity in making fake videos under the Sexual Violence Punishment Act).

Victim B said: “I got a call from the police first and I asked the police to come and say I was a deepfake victim,” adding: “(When I looked at the composite photo), I took my top off and synthesized it. “I’ve never held a grudge, but I don’t know why it is like that,” he said.

In response, A reportedly contacted the show’s production team and claimed he had been misunderstood. When the production team asked, “Have you ever made a deepfake sexual exploitation?” he said, “I don’t think I can tell you. This is not the end of the matter,” he said, sparing his words.

In response, the production team said to A, “Let’s meet and talk,” but A said, “I have an essay test in October. He refused because he also goes to a reading room and is in a managed academy, so it’s difficult to meet.”

The production team met with Mr. A’s father on behalf of Mr. A, who is busy. Mr. A’s father said, “I’m not interested in (the fact that deepfake sexual exploitation is illegal),” adding, “I’m taking a child test. There’s essay writing in October and CSAT in November,” he said.

“Not only the victims, but he also has a month until the test,” he said. “I was very stressed by that (deepfake incident). We are also being investigated by the police,” he said.

Meanwhile, the National Police Agency’s “Statistics on Crimes Related to Fake Videos (Illegal Compilations Edited with Deepfake Crimes)” released on July 3 show that of the 178 suspects of deepfake crimes arrested up to July this year, 73.6% are teenagers131.
