Social scientist Simeon Joseph proposes understanding the background, circumstances, mindset and activities of criminal gang members as Antigua’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne talks to gangs in the country

As Antigua grapples with rising crime rates, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has made a bold call for a ceasefire with criminal gangs in the country. In response, social scientist Simeon Joseph stressed the importance of understanding the background, circumstances, mindset and activities of gang members before entering into negotiations with organised crime groups.

Joseph explained that successful engagement with gangs requires a deep understanding of how these groups function and why they feel disconnected from society. He pointed out that gangs often develop a sense of survival and belonging based on unmet needs and perceived failures by various sectors of society. Joseph emphasized the need for dialogue that addresses these issues and finds ways to better support gang members, thereby reducing crime and promoting a more peaceful community.
