JMPD Arrests Four Suspects for Extortion and Intimidation

The Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) have arrested four suspects following reports of extortion at a Total Garage construction site in Marshalltown.

The suspects, believed to be part of the construction mafia, demanded R1000 daily from the workers and blocked access to the construction site.

According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the incident took place at the intersection of Simmonds Street and Thorpe Street.

Fihla says the city is committed to eliminating the impact of criminal organisations and creating a safe environment for businesses and construction projects in Johannesburg.

“Our decisive action today illustrates that we will not tolerate any form of extortion or intimidation. As we move forward, the JMPD will continue to work with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to end these unlawful activities and promote a safer Johannesburg for all.”
