Coast Guard finds drug trafficking tools in Northern Ambergris

The northern part of Ambergris Caye is known for its drug activity. On Sunday, the Coast Guard encountered a number of drug gangs there.

They say that while on patrol near Deer Caye, northwest of Ambergris Caye, they seized a cache of drugs, ammunition and two high-powered rifles. They discovered a white cooler covered in a gray canvas, with a black plastic bag inside. The black plastic bag contained three packages of suspected cannabis wrapped in clear plastic, a black AR-15 rifle, along with an empty magazine, an AK-47 semi-automatic rifle with an empty magazine and 21 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

There was no one around when the items were found. All items were turned over to the police.

Drug gangs are known to operate in the area, scouring the beaches and sea for drugs destined for the Mexican cartels in Quintana Roo.
