Make Our Communities Safer from Gun Violence and Crime As U.S. Attorney, Vice President Harris fought violent crime by taking illegal guns and violent criminals off California’s streets. During her tenure as U.S. District Attorney, she increased conviction rates for violent offenders, including gang members, gun owners, and domestic abusers. As Attorney General, Vice President Harris built on this record by taking more than 12,000 illegal guns off California’s streets and prosecuting some of the world’s worst transnational criminal organizations.

In the White House, Vice President Harris helped deliver the largest investment in public safety ever, investing $15 billion to support local law enforcement and community safety programs in 1,000 cities, towns and counties. President Biden and Vice President Harris fostered bipartisan collaboration to pass the first major gun safety law in nearly 30 years, including record funding to hire and train more than 14,000 mental health professionals for our schools. As head of the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, she led policies to expand background checks and close the gun show loophole. Under her and President Biden’s leadership, violent crime is at a 50-year low, with the largest annual decline in homicides on record.

As president, she will not stop fighting so that Americans have the freedom to live safely from gun violence in our schools, in our communities, and in our places of worship. She will ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require universal background checks, and support red flag laws that keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. She will also continue to invest in funding for law enforcement, including hiring and training officers and the people to support them, and will build on proven gun violence prevention programs that have helped reduce violent crime across the country.
