Sheriff Candidate Tyler Kamp Explains Why He’s the Best Choice for Maricopa County Sheriff on 12 News

Maricopa County Sheriff Candidate Tyler Kamp spoke with Troy Hayden on local NBC Channel 12 News about his qualifications for the sheriff’s office, laid out his vision and made the case for why Maricopa County can’t afford to go backwards.

When Hayden asked him why he was running and why voters should support him, Kamp responded, “I’ve always been someone who wants to serve a cause that’s bigger than myself. I think the need is clear. We’ve seen what’s happened in the past with discrimination against people of color, the violation of people’s rights, which has cost the county almost $300 million and it continues to grow. So I think we know there’s a need for a good sheriff. I’ve worked for the Phoenix Police Department for over two decades. Over half of that time has been spent investigating organized crime, criminal street gangs, murder, cold case murders. I have 10 years of experience in leadership, public safety and leadership.”

Hayden then asked questions about the MCSO’s staffing shortages and the infamous court orders that went into effect during the Joe Arpaio and Jerry Sheridan administrations.

Kamp explained his plan for the future, emphasizing what his vision is for the Sheriff’s Office to graduate from the injunction: “I’m going to work with the Board of Supervisors to create a merit-based pay scale system that is comparable to other law enforcement agencies in the valley. I’m going to create a walk-in wellness clinic that not only meets their (employees’) physical needs, but their mental needs as well. I think we need to ensure fairness for everyone. We need to keep politics out of public safety. When I talk to people across the county, they don’t want politics involved because it can affect public safety. And we need to make sure that everyone knows that we have fairness for everyone, no matter who you are or where you come from.”
