How the Buffalo Bills Helped Build the Kansas City Chiefs Dynasty

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — While the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills both put in strong performances, victories in week 1Many fans noted that the Bills actually helped shape the current Chiefs dynasty.

In the 2017 draft, the Bills traded back with the Chiefs, who ultimately used that pick to select Patrick Mahomeswho is the consensus number one quarterback in the NFL. Just a few years later, and the Bills have done it again, this time with speed devil Xavier Worthy.

In this year’s NFL draft, the Bills again traded with the Chiefs, who then used the Bills’ pick to select Xavier Worthy in the late first round. That move, like the 2017 trade, could certainly hurt the Bills.

But what about the Bills? Did they get anything of comparable value from these trades?

In the 2017 draft, the Bills received a 2017 first-round pick, a 2017 second-round pick, and a 2018 first-round pick from the Chiefs. They used those picks to select cornerback Tre’Davious White, wide receiver Zay Jones, and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.

None of these players currently play for the Bills, nor do they compare to Mahomes and the impact he has had on the NFL.

In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Bills traded their first-round pick, used to draft Worthy, along with a fourth- and seventh-round pick. In return, the Bills received the Chiefs’ first-round pick, a third-round pick, and a seventh-round pick.

The first-round pick was again traded by the Bills, with the Chiefs’ other two picks used for defensive tackle DeWayne Carter and offensive guard Travis Clayton.

Interestingly, the Bills apparently weren’t interested in Xavier Worthy, who was seen as a late first-round pick after losing key receivers Gabe Davis and Stefon Diggs.

The Bills’ wide receiver space appears to be quite tight right now, and that was evident in the Bills’ Week 1 win, when Josh Allen was essentially forced to score four touchdowns, two passing and two rushing, in a home defeat of the Arizona Cardinals.

Worthy’s historic performance in the first week has the Bills Mafia now wondering why their team keeps doing this.
