Statement by Robert Gass, UNICEF Representative in Malaysia, on cases of child abuse in nursing homes

PUTRAJAYA, SEPTEMBER 12, 2024 – UNICEF is deeply shocked and dismayed by reports that 402 children in Malaysia have been victims of exploitation, sexual abuse and neglect in several nursing homes in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.

These children have experienced unimaginable horrors and require long-term professional medical and psychosocial support. The damage caused is severe and often has lifelong consequences.

We commend the Royal Malaysia Police and other national authorities for their action and coordination in rescuing these children. We hope that this action marks the end of their trauma and the beginning of their healing journey.

As long as children in Malaysia remain in unregulated institutional care settings, they are at greater risk of becoming victims of violence and abuse.

Children in institutional care need the support of qualified social workers who can effectively monitor care homes. UNICEF stands ready to support governments in protecting children deprived of parental care and preventing unnecessary separation of family and child.

It is time to adopt a zero tolerance attitude towards violence against children in all its forms. Every child has the right to grow up in a supportive family environment.
