It is the second murder of a prison director in nine days in the South American country.

Ecuador’s National Service for Integrated Care for Persons Deprived of Their Liberty (SNAI) reported Thursday that María Daniela Icaza, director of the Penitentiary del Litoral, the largest and most populated prison in Ecuador, was killed in an attack that injured another prison guard.

The attack on Icaza and his companion took place around 6:00 p.m. local time (23:00 GMT) on Thursday, on the road between Daule and Guayaquil, where the Penitentiary of the Coastal Area is located.

According to local media, Icaza’s vehicle, which was in the co-pilot’s seat, was intercepted by armed men while she was en route to Guasmo Sur Hospital in southern Guayaquil.

The SNAI initially reported that Icaza had been taken to hospital alive, but later confirmed her death.

This is the second killing of a prison director in nine days, after Álex Guevara, director of Lago Agrio prison in the Amazonian province of Sucumbíos, was killed under similar circumstances on September 3.

The Litoral Penitentiary, also known as the Guayas Male Deprivation Center Number 1, is the largest of the five prisons in the Guayaquil prison complex and houses approximately 12,000 inmates.

The Litoral Penitentiary was the scene of the worst massacres between 2021 and 2023, as a result of fighting between criminal gangs seeking internal control.
