Tragic boat accident in Zamfara state: 64 feared dead

At least 64 people were killed in a boat accident on a river in Zamfara state in northwestern Nigeria on Saturday, local authorities said.

A wooden boat carrying 70 farmers capsized while transporting them across the river to their farmlands near Gummi town early Saturday morning. Local authorities quickly mobilized residents for a rescue operation and managed to rescue six survivors after three hours of effort. “This is the second time such an incident has occurred in Gummi local government area,” said Aminu Nuhu Falale, a local administrator leading the rescue efforts.

Emergency teams are intensifying their search for more survivors. More than 900 farmers rely on this river crossing daily to reach their farmlands, but the availability of only two boats often results in overcrowding, according to the local traditional ruler.

Zamfara State is also grappling with problems related to criminal gangs fighting for control of mineral resources and severe flooding caused by heavy rains. More than 10,000 residents were displaced by flooding two weeks ago, officials added. (Reporting by Isaac Anyaogu; Editing by Ros Russell)
