Cowboys Can’t Keep Up With Cougs In 34-14 Setback

* Press release from the University of Wyoming

LARAMIE — The Wyoming Cowboys (0-3 overall) lost 34-14 to old rival BYU (3-0 overall) Saturday night at War Memorial Stadium.

It was the first meeting between the two teams in Laramie since the 2009 season and the 80th overall in the series. The attendance of 24,513 was the Cowboys’ second straight sellout. It’s the first time that’s happened since 1967.

Wyoming welcomed more than 25,000 spectators to the season opener, as standing room only was available.

“Credit to (BYU),” UW head coach Jay Sawvel said. “They’ve got a really solid defense. They’re big and they’re physical at all levels. I think that’s a problem. As a team, we’ve got to get back and keep working and getting better. Right now, we’ve lost to teams that are a combined 8-1. We’ve got to get back to work. That’s what it is. We all know there’s things we’ve got to get better at, and we know there’s things we’re not doing well enough. We’ve got to step up our game, and that’s frustrating.”

The Cougars ran up 458 yards of offense through the air and used a 100-yard kickoff return to open the second half and secure the win, as BYU receives votes in both the Associated Press and Coaches Poll. The Cougar defense allowed just 217 yards of total offense, while the Cowboys recorded 140 yards through the air and 77 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Evan Svoboda recorded a career-high 140 yards passing in the game. He also added 31 yards rushing to lead the team. Wide receiver Tyler King recorded a career-high three catches for a career-high 52 yards. Fellow wide receiver Jaylen Sargent had two catches, tying a career-high 18 yards.

The Cowboy defense was led by Isaac White with a game-high 10 tackles, a personal best. He also added a pass breakup in the game. Cornerback Keany Parks added a personal best of six tackles. Defensive end Sabastian Harsh added seven tackles in the game and added a tackle for loss.

Punter Jack Culbreath scored eight points at an average of 43.8 yards per point, including a long 50 yards.

The Cowboys return to action next Saturday when they travel to North Texas for a 5 pm MT matchup on ESPN+. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
