WB Guv demands CBI probe into corruption at NBMCH, accuses TMC of encouraging ‘medical mafia’

KOLKATA: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Monday demanded a CBI probe into corruption and malpractices alleged by junior doctors and medical students at the North Bengal Medical College & Hospital (NBMCH). The Governor further accused the Trinamool Congress government of encouraging the “medical mafia” at the institution.

On Monday, NBMCH authorities took action against seven doctors, including three senior doctors and five students, for allegedly manipulating exam results, resorting to haughtiness and threatening junior and senior doctors and students.

According to authorities, most of them had close ties with the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP).

Following the rape and murder of the junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, junior doctors and students have been protesting en masse in the state.

NBMCH alleged that some doctors and students affiliated with the TMCP maintained a “culture of threats” and manipulated examinations and results.

A few days ago, Darjeeling MP Raju Bista Bista in his letter to Governor CV Ananda Bose demanded the resignation of NBMCH Director Indrajit Saha.

“As the head of the institution, he cannot evade his responsibility and must resign. We also want a thorough investigation to find out whether such illegal practices were prevalent in other government medical colleges in the state,” said Bista, who is also a national spokesperson for the BJP.

Later in the day, Bista took part in a sit-in demonstration at Hashmi Chowk, a major intersection in Siliguri, along with BJP leaders and workers, to protest the RG Kar incident.

“We want the CBI to nab everyone involved in this heinous crime. The state government has done everything it can to hide facts and evidence after the incident,” he added.
