Background:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 107,000 people will die from drug overdoses in the United States in 2023. Nearly 75,000 of these deaths were due to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.

The The prevention of the Illicit Synthetic Drug Financing Act would direct the Comptroller General of the United States (GAO) to investigate the illicit financing of synthetic drug trafficking and submit to Congress the business model of these organizations, how they move and hide their illicit revenues, and what the U.S. government can do to better prevent fentanyl laundering. The GAO would submit its report to Congress no later than one year after the legislation takes effect.
