BJP leader Sandeep G Varier made sharp remarks about the new film organisation to be set up under the leadership of filmmaker Aashiq Abu and his wife Rima Kallingal.

Sandeep G Varier:

“Progressive Filmmakers of India. PFI. Nothing went wrong when the Mattancherry mafia found the exact name they deserved.

“Skidding off money collected during the relief campaigns, destroying Malayalam cinemas, making anti-national propaganda films, condoning drug use, giving names to drugs to their own production company and not paying remuneration to the employees who worked on their films. These are the essential qualities that make up the so-called Mattancherry Mafia.”

It is rumoured that the Progressive Film Makers Association was originally conceived as a left-wing producers’ organisation. Later it was transformed into a labour organisation as an alternative to FEFKA. A letter titled ‘Vision for a Progressive Malayalam Film Producers Association’ in English was sent by the organisers of the new movement to some producers.

Some were approached directly. The second paragraph of the letter states that the aim was a new association of producers. It also states that left-progressive values would be upheld. But in the Malayalam letter describing the new organisation, the word producers was replaced by workers. The part saying ‘Left-progressive values’ was changed to the values ’Equality, cooperation and social justice’.

Aashiq Abu has been targeting disgruntled members of the producers’ association and FEFKA to join him in this new organisation. Meanwhile, producer Sandra Thomas responded that she had received an invitation to the association. Sandra said that she plans to remain with the Producers Association and said that she will not be joining the new organisation.
