Following the recent announcement that steps could be taken in Ecuador to allow the establishment of US military bases, member states of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) have expressed concern about the decision.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the organization warned that “allowing foreign military bases on the territory of countries of Our America poses a threat to the peace and stability of the entire region, and undermines agreements for peaceful coexistence between states.”

The text also states that they “promote foreign interference, the plundering of natural resources, the control of governments and the management of illicit markets in the countries that host them.”

“The Bolivarian Alliance has repeatedly condemned the use of the simulated fight against drug trafficking and transnational organized crime as a pretext to pave the way for interference in the internal affairs of states. Accordingly, it endorses the creation of military bases on the continent with all the dangers and risks that this entails,” the document argues.

The communiqué further emphasizes that Latin America and the Caribbean have declared themselves a zone of peace and that the ALBA-TCP countries strongly support this commitment.

Despite the concerns, ALBA-TCP trusts in the conscience of the Ecuadorian people to maintain its sovereignty and prevent the installation of military bases in the country.
