The Godfather meets superheroes: this grandiose series doesn’t care about its superstar

A little over two years ago, the comic book adaptation of the dark avenger Batman was released, directed by Matt Reeves. The film was incredibly well received by critics, although Robert Pattinson was initially laughed at for the role of the superhero. DC of course took notice and immediately started working on a spin-off of the popular film, but in the form of a series. Could this turn out well? And how well could it turn out, because this series even puts the very well-reviewed film in the shade.

We’re talking about The Penguin, which will be available exclusively on HBO’s streaming service WOW from September 20, 2024. From now on, we can look forward to a new episode of The Penguin every Sunday, taking over the premium spot of HBO series, following in the footsteps of House of the Dragon. And it’s already more than successful. The series currently has a 94% critic score, making it one of the best series we’ve seen this year. The user score is also just below that at 89%, which makes fans hope for more of The Penguin and Gotham.

The perfect cast

We already saw Colin Farell as Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot, better known as the Penguin, in The Batman (now on sale for €8.99). Now he has his own series and he is far removed from the real superhero story of Bruce Wayne. It is a criminal mafia drama that takes place after the events of The Batman. So we would not be surprised if we see a brief appearance of the dark avenger here. Spoilers follow.

This is what The Penguin is about

The series starts with a strange buddy drama between Penguin and a boy, whom he recruits instead of executing because he saw him dispose of Falcone’s body. At the beginning of the series, the small-time criminal Penguin wants to become an accomplice and infiltrate Gotham’s big crime scene. This works out very well and at the end of the episode he escapes blame for the mob boss’ murder with a brilliant plan. And the fans seem to agree. We are curious to see if the series can maintain its high standards and thus its user score.
