Steelers Strong Defense Helps Them Past Falcons – SwiftCurrentOnline.com

The Swift Current U14 Steelers took advantage of a good defence at home on Saturday to defeat the visiting Weyburn Falcons.

Quarterback Jax Brown threw a touchdown and ran for another in the Steelers’ 13-2 win over Weyburn for their second straight victory of the season.

“We can always count on Jax to have a strong game,” Steelers head coach Tyson Congdon said after the game. “He does a really good job of trusting his teammates and listening to what our play is and doing what his job is. When the play breaks down, he can do a lot with his legs.”

Brown opened the scoring 5:44 into the first quarter on the Steelers’ first possession of the game, finding the end zone with a 10-yard run. Swift Current made the extra point kick to make it 7-0.

The Steelers extended their lead to 13-0 in the second quarter when Brown passed the ball to receiver Liam Holliday, who completed a 27-yard pass into the end zone.

The Swift Current defense came up with several goal-line stands to stop the Falcons and force a couple of turnovers on downs. In one of these instances, the Steelers were trapped in their endzone for a safety, allowing the only two points of the game that Weyburn would score.

“The defense really stepped up,” he said. “We got an early lead and our defense held us in the second half.”

The Steelers are now 2-2 and host the Moose Jaw Mafia next Sunday at 4 p.m.
