Systems to tackle extortion – Scotland

According to National Security Minister Keith Scotland, systems are in place to tackle extortion.

Scotland spoke to Guardian Media on Friday evening following a 90-minute closed meeting with members of the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CCIC) at the chamber’s Cumberbatch Street headquarters.

Scotland urged businessmen to report extortion to police as T&T police have taken several measures to speed up police response time.

He said one MP reported that it took seven minutes for police to respond to a call on Friday morning.

Scotland said he would not comment on plans for Central.

“That will remain the case, because we want to see the results first and then we can talk about them, but the House is convinced that we are acting in their interests.

“Minister (Fitzgerald) Hinds and I, the Government of T&T, are doing our utmost to deploy resources in the Central Division.”

House Speaker Baldath Maharaj said he was pleased with the response from Scotland.

Maharaj said some strategies were put into effect Friday. “We feel much more confident that the police will be there.”

He said there is a plan in place to tackle extortion.

“There is a robust plan in place as to how we catch them; he (Scotland) now knows where they are, what they are actually doing and how they are extorting money from companies.”

CCIC members also expressed concerns about the presence of Venezuelan gangs, firearms, violence and criminal activity during the Christmas season.
