Colorado Governor on Trump’s Comments on Aurora, Border Security, Housing

(CBS, KYMA/KECY) – Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) spoke to Margaret Brennan on Face the Nation Sunday morning about former President Trump’s recent comments about Aurora, Colorado.

“What a lot of Americans need to know is that Aurora has a population of over 400,000. It’s the third largest city in Colorado. Violent crime is down two years in a row. Auto thefts are down two years in a row. It’s a great city. I’m there all the time. It’s a really great, diverse city and it’s growing rapidly. It’s probably going to be the number one or number two city in Colorado in the next 10 or 20 years. So it’s a great city. It’s safer than it’s ever been. And look, it’s just like any other city: Chicago, LA, mid-sized cities, Denver, of course, Aurora has had a gang problem for decades and I feel like we’re finally turning the corner. I mean, this is the difference between electing a president who’s been a lawbreaker and one who’s made a career out of enforcing the law. I mean, Kamala Harris is someone who stared criminal enterprises in the eye and put criminals behind bars as a prosecutor, and she’s going to bring that same attitude to the White House to make America safer.”

Brennan and Polis also talked about border security. Brennan wondered if Harris’ campaign should be talking about this more. Polis responded:

“I think that’s a legitimate and important topic to talk about. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, the Democratic and Republican leaders in Congress, had a real bill in front of them to make the investments that we need to make in border security. Look, I’ve been to the border. I’ve been to border crossings. We need better border security. Kamala Harris will make that happen, because it’s not a simple proposal. It requires investments, investments in high-tech, fencing, scanning, more Border Patrol agents, which the bill would have funded for more Border Patrol agents. So look, I have confidence that Kamala Harris is someone who will actually solve the border problem, rather than perpetuating it for purely political reasons and to divide us. We need someone who will unite us, and that includes, of course, securing our border.”

The pair also discussed Vice President Kamala Harris’ housing plan. According to Brennan, Harris wants to give first-time homebuyers a $25,000 down payment credit, in addition to a $10,000 tax credit.

“That’s one of the plans. Her plan is focused on creating over three million new homes, cutting red tape and paperwork, making it easier to build homes that people can afford. Yes, part of that is we want people, when they can, to become owners instead of renters, so that they can create value. This is the opportunity economy that she’s talking about, right? Renting a home, a place to live, is important. Owning a home, building equity and wealth over time, that’s what Kamala Harris believes in. So of course, three million new homes, cutting red tape and paperwork, making it easier to build is part of that, helping renters transition to owners is a key thing that we need to do to make America more successful.”
