Title: The Plague of Our Time, The Trustbuster, In the Archives
Broadcast date: 2024-09-22
Episode plot: PLAGUE OF OUR TIME – The synthetic opioid fentanyl was designed to help patients in excruciating pain. But after finding its way from hospitals to communities in every corner of the country, it has created the worst drug crisis in American history, killing more than 70,000 Americans last year alone. Bill Whitaker examines the root causes, from prescription opioids sold by some of America’s biggest pharmaceutical companies to the takeover of the illicit fentanyl market by Mexican cartels, and questions top U.S. officials about what’s being done to stem the deadly tide. THE TRUSTBUSTER – Lesley Stahl interviews the Federal Trade Commission’s youngest-ever chair, Lina Khan. The powerful and polarizing trustbuster discusses her determination to enforce antitrust policy as part of a Biden administration breaking with 40 years of a hands-off approach. IN THE ARCHIVES – After former President Donald Trump and then-Vice President Biden withheld documents that were supposed to be turned over to the National Archives, the small federal agency charged with protecting America’s past found itself in the national spotlight. 60 MINUTES spent several months inside the Archives, where Norah O’Donnell was granted rare access to not only the nation’s founding documents, but also to restricted vaults and priceless artifacts including Revolutionary War-era allegiance oaths signed by George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, Adolf Hitler’s last will and testament, and President Nixon’s letter of resignation. O’Donnell also spoke with the custodians responsible for preserving presidential documents about why that mission is so important. The story explores the Archives’ past and present, and also includes some news about a major change in the future: the Emancipation Proclamation and the 19th Amendment will be permanently displayed in the Archives Rotunda in Washington in 2026, joining the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights, just in time for America’s 250th anniversary. Keith Sharman and Roxanne Feitel serve as executive producers.
