Odisha govt hails landmark Supreme Court verdict on child pornography; announces formation of special task force

The Odisha government has lauded the recent Supreme Court verdict on child pornography and announced the formation of a special task force to investigate and prosecute related cases. This specialised unit will focus on tackling child pornography, ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice and protecting vulnerable children from exploitation.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development (W&CD) said in an official statement: “The state will implement the Supreme Court ruling which unequivocally states that viewing and downloading child pornography is a punishable offense.

This historic decision sends a strong message that the state will not tolerate any form of sexual exploitation of children. It reinforces the responsibility of every citizen to protect our children and ensure their safety and well-being. The state firmly asserts that ignorance of the law will no longer serve as a defense for those who exploit or endanger minors.

According to the law, engaging in child pornography, whether through viewing or downloading, is a serious crime that must be fully prosecuted. The state reaffirms its commitment to maintaining strict legal frameworks aimed at eliminating child sexual exploitation in all forms, the state said.

“The state will improve coordination with law enforcement agencies to effectively combat the distribution and consumption of child pornography. This includes setting up special task forces to investigate and prosecute such crimes,” the report said.

In line with the Supreme Court’s recommendations, the state will invest in comprehensive support services for victims of child abuse, providing them with the care and resources they need to recover, the statement said.

The government is calling on the public to report suspicious activities to protect vulnerable children.

The state expresses gratitude to the Supreme Court for its decisive action and leadership in protecting the rights and dignity of our children. Together we must collectively work towards creating a safer environment for every child in Odisha, the statement said.

It is to be noted that the Supreme Court of India has ruled that downloading, viewing and storing child pornography is a punishable offence under the POCSO Act, overturning a controversial judgment of the Madras High Court. This landmark judgment underscores the commitment of the legal system to protect children from sexual exploitation.

On September 23, 2024, a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala condemned High’s earlier judgment as “appalling” and “emphasized the urgent need to protect vulnerable children from sexual exploitation.
