Bills’ Von Miller Drops Game of Thrones Reference About Playing for Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 47-10 in Week 3 on Monday Night Football in Orchard Park. It was a beautiful 68 degrees at kickoff on a perfect fall evening in Western New York. So despite coming from balmy Florida, the Jaguars can’t blame their disappointing performance on the weather. Still, future Hall of Famer Von Miller sent a Game of Thrones-style warning to the rest of the NFL after the game: Winter is Coming.

“Von Miller summed up life in Western/Central New York perfectly onstage after the Bills game,” Emily Leiker of Syracuse.com reported after the game before sharing his comments.

“You walk into the facility and it’s sunny, and you walk out and it could be a Game of Thrones snowstorm in here. ‘Winter is coming’ all year round here,” Miller joked.

Miller is right. Winter is coming to Western New York, and teams know what that means. It means cold, lots of snow, and an undisturbed Bills Mafia crowd enjoying their natural habitat. With nods to Green Bay’s Lambeau Field and Chicago’s Soldier Field, Buffalo’s Highmark Stadium is perhaps the most fearsome place to play in the winter for NFL teams.

In Western New York, on the strip of land between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, it’s not uncommon to get a snowstorm on Halloween. But for our purposes here, let’s just say December is the month when the potential for big Lake Effect snow in Buffalo really hits.

Between December 1 and December 29, the Bills play three home games. On 12/1 they host the San Francisco 49ers, on 12/22 the New England Patriots come to town and in the final home game of the 2024 regular season on 12/29 the Bills take on the New York Jets.

The fact that one of the best teams in the NFC and two division opponents travel to Buffalo in potentially bad weather is a huge advantage for the Bills. The 49ers game is primetime on Sunday night, and when the sun goes down, conditions for this game could be brutal. The Pats and Jets games both kick off at 1 p.m. ET, for now, but both teams know exactly how difficult it is to get Josh Allen and the Bills to play in bad weather.

The biggest advantage the Bills could have, though, is if they can clinch the No. 1 seed and host multiple playoff games in Orchard Park. The 2024-25 playoffs run from Jan. 11-26, and if a team like the Kansas City Chiefs has to go through Buffalo again this year, the results could be mixed depending on how hard the winter hits.
