(September 25, 2024 – Fredericksburg, Virginia)American Life League’s deep dive into the emerging abortion pill industry reveals that the federal government is enabling cartel-like networks to illegally distribute the DIY abortion drug combination mifepristone and misoprostol on a massive scale. The Food and Drug Administration’s 2023 elimination of regulations for obtaining the drugs and the United States Postal Service’s failure to investigate the illegal distribution of the drugs through the mail are allowing the organization to expand unchecked. A new report from American Life League, Beneath the Surface: Exposing the Abortion Pill CartelReleased on September 25, 2024, it details a network modeled after notorious drug cartels that is fueling a growing epidemic of unlimited, self-inflicted abortions rivaling America’s deadly drug crisis.

In 2023, drug overdose deaths in the United States will surpass 107,000, while more than six times as many children will be killed by DIY abortions. There has been an avalanche of political concern over the massive amounts of fentanyl, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and even cannabis flowing freely into the United States via Mexican cartels. Little attention has been paid to the trade in the pills used in DIY chemical abortions, which are flying across the border into America from abroad in staggering quantities.

“Women across America are gaining access to these pills at an astonishing rate, despite the increased protections for unborn children that many states have implemented since the fall of Roe vs. Wade,” noted Katie Brown, national director of the American Life League. “It’s clear that the FDA has dropped the ball on this one. As a government agency charged with overseeing drugs coming into this country, they have failed. And where is the USPS? The post office is supposed to be checking packages for illegal items, yet black market abortion drugs are being shipped into every state.”

An investigation by the American Life League revealed that a network exists that smuggles these two abortion-inducing drugs from abroad into states where abortion is illegal.

Key Findings in Beneath the Surface: Exposing the Abortion Pill Cartel to involve:

  • Mexico-based Las Libres illegally ships abortion pills on the black market to U.S. states and U.S. territories that restrict abortion. This is one of several “Community Partner Networks” that do so.
  • Anyone can buy these unregulated, non-prescription abortion drugsThey are marketed over the Internet to unverified customers by unauthorized, unvalidated suppliers, with no oversight of drug quality, purity, or recipient suitability.
  • Orders are secret and untraceable, while women who want to order abortion pills through the mail are learning how to send anonymous, cryptic emails through private search engines and secret apps.
  • “Lie to your doctor” is the instruction that Las Libres gives to its voters, with specific details on how they can “hide their abortion if they suffer from excessive bleeding and need medical attention.”

In March 2024, the Guttmacher Institute reported that medical abortions would account for 63 percent of all abortions in the United States in 2023. The reported number of prenatal deaths from chemical abortion exceeds 642,000.

Brown wants to remind people that these illegal abortion pills are just one factor in the current disturbing trend of do-it-yourself abortions.

“These unsupervised procedures — done by themselves without constant medical supervision — are incredibly traumatic and dangerous for women,” Brown explained. “Even legitimately distributed abortion pills come with an FDA warning about potentially fatal infections. The Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care reports that many women who have taken these drugs report extreme stress and trauma caused by expelling their dead baby’s body at home, alone, after days of nausea, severe cramping, and bleeding. The FDA and USPS should be paying close attention to this illegal importation of dangerous DIY abortion drugs.”
