RG Kar tragedy: Senior doctors call for a joint platform to clean up the healthcare system in Bengal

Kolkata, September 27 (SocialNews. to clean.

The mass convention comes amid protests over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital last month.

Stressing on the need to continue the movement, senior physician Dr Arnab Goswami said there is a need for a bigger and concerted platform for that purpose, involving not only representatives of the medical fraternity but also people from different walks of life.

“The joint platform is necessary to prolong the movement,” he said.

Describing young doctors as the pillar of the medical system, the director of the state-run SSKM Medical College & Hospital, Manimoy Bandyopadhyay, said the macabre tragedy at RG Kar was unimaginable.

“All those directly and indirectly involved must be identified and punished,” he said.

Medical lecturer, writer and documentary maker Tirthankar Guha Thakurta said the recent ‘threat culture’ in medical colleges is worrying.

“We were raised to be reprimanded by our teachers. That was something different. But the trend of allowing people to pass exams for money is simply unacceptable. At the same time, both male and female students must be protected from victims of sexual exploitation,” he said.

Also invited as a speaker at the mass convention was renowned film director Kaushik Ganguly.

According to him, it is clear that there is something wrong in the system if the doctors in training have to take to the streets to support their demands.

“I would like to assure the protesting trainee doctors that this is not just their movement. People like former RG Kar director Sandip Ghosh are everywhere. It’s time to completely remove them from the system. I will ask the junior doctors to be patient and continue their movement,” he said.
