Philly Gays: New 76ers Arena Will Ruin ‘Gayborhood’ With Influx of Straight Men

In a sign of the times, Philadelphia gays are FURIOUS about a proposed downtown arena for the 76ers because it could ruin their “Gayborhood,” according to a statement from the Alphabet Mafia.

One of their biggest concerns is that a new arena would bring too many straight men to the ‘hood.

On Thursday, a group called No Arena Gayborhood (that’s its name on Google Maps) said in a statement that it will “deliver signed petitions to City Council members highlighting the ways in which 76 Place would threaten Philadelphia’s historic Gayborhood, its residents, businesses and service providers.” and the LGBTQ+ community in Greater Philadelphia.”

Is it possible that gays can hold down an arena in a huge American city?

Based on the letter from No Arena Gayborhood, it sounds like we are about to see a gay revolution in this arena.

“An arena just steps away from the Gayborhood poses a clear threat of gentrification and displacement. Developers will prioritize commercial establishments that target a more mainstream, non-queer audienceleaving LGBTQ+ businesses – bars, bookstores, restaurants and even affordable housing – vulnerable to being displaced,” the statement continued.

Isn’t this discrimination against straight men who want to watch the NBA and the eventual NCAA Tournament games that come to town?

Here is a map of the ‘Gayborhood’ that gays fear will be ruined by straight men. The arena would be built on the east side of Market Street on land near the convention center and Reading Terminal Market.

But the gays say the arena will be too close to their neighborhood, which starts two blocks south of the arena. If there’s one neighborhood that really has a problem, it’s Chinatown. Just look at the maps for yourself: Chinatown versus the Gayborhood.

“Philly sports fans are known for being loud,” a No Arena Gayborhood supporter told Philadelphia Gay News in March. “Would people in the Gayborhood feel safe?”

“Will (audiences) show respect to people who are transgender and non-binary — to people who go in and out of bars in leather or in drag?”

“The Gayborhood is supposed to be a safe space, and even if it doesn’t create a real problem, it will create a perceived problem — where people will feel like, ‘I can’t go out. I have to.’ stay home if they have a game.”

Ultimately, we know how this will end. Philly’s gays will scream and use this as a rallying cry against the marginalization of their community and demand reparations in exchange for the arena.
