11 cartel gunmen killed in clash with border state police in Mexico

Police in the Mexican border state killed 11 cartel gunmen during a series of gun battles as gunmen tried to terrorize locals. The shootings took place in the Mexican border state of Nuevo Leon.

The attacks began on Wednesday in General Teran’s city, Nuevo Leon, when a group of armed men approached the city’s police station and began shooting at the building. No injuries were reported in the first attack.

The gunmen tried to flee, but authorities called for help and began a search in an attempt to locate the gunmen.

According to a press release from the Nuevo Leon State Police (known as Civil Force), hours after the initial attack, state police forces encountered a convoy of cartel gunmen in the town of Los Ramones, just northeast of the Monterrey metropolitan area. The gunmen tried to flee and then clashed with police in a large-scale gun battle, during which authorities arrested one suspect and killed 11 gunmen. Authorities also seized six vehicles and several weapons.

The gun battles come as Nuevo Leon continues to see a dramatic rise in violence as several drug cartels, including the Sinaloa Cartel, the Gulf Cartel and the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas, clash in fierce turf wars.

According to Monterrey’s Periodico ABC, government officials believe the initial attack on General Teran’s police building was an attempt by armed men to intimidate police, as authorities have increased patrols and security checks in the region in recent weeks. The increased security activities led to the arrest of twelve armed men.
