Petition · Mandatory disclosure of human trafficking and sexual exploitation in public buildings

I am a survivor of years of sex and labor trafficking that took place within my local church – a public building that was supposed to be a place of protection and safety. But that wasn’t the case. Far from it. Today, minors, women and men continue to enter this building, unaware of the dire dangers to which they are unknowingly exposed. That’s why I rise today to demand that the U.S. National Health Agency direct all public buildings to inform those entering if there have ever been any incidents of human trafficking or sexual exploitation on their premises.

Human trafficking in America is a major concern, with an estimated 403,000 people living in conditions of “modern slavery” within our borders (Global Slavery Index 2018). Similarly, 1 in 9 girls and 1 in 53 boys under the age of 18 are reported to experience sexual abuse or assault by an adult (American Journal of Public Health, 2017). But what’s even more shocking is that many of these horrific activities continue to take place in places where society least expects it: public buildings such as libraries, schools and places of worship.

Our citizens deserve to know about this before entering a place where such atrocities have taken place. The mindfulness that could possibly save them from becoming victims of such unfathomable crimes. Informing people about previous cases of sexual exploitation or human trafficking will increase overall public safety, awareness, and people’s ability to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Every individual has the right to security and personal safety. Therefore, we demand that the US National Health Agency act quickly to mandate such a disclosure rule. We need your support to ensure the sanctity and safety of our public buildings. It is time to prioritize the well-being of our people over the fear of tarnishing a building’s reputation. Sign this petition and help protect our citizens.
