10 graphic novels and comics for fans of spicy books

Isabelle Popp has written everything from astrophysics research articles and math tests to crossword puzzles and poetry. Nowadays she writes romance. When she’s not reading or writing, she’s probably knitting or scouring used bookstores for vintage gothic-romance paperbacks. Originally from New York, she is as surprised as anyone to find herself living in Bloomington, Indiana.

If you’re a feisty book reader who hasn’t dabbled in comics at all, you’re in for a treat. Comics are honestly such a great medium for romantic content and spice. What I love about reading romance is the way an author’s words can express feelings so beautifully. Using only words, readers are drawn along as they follow along as characters fall for each other, pine for love interests, or experience near-fatal levels of horniness.

Comics can take that one step further! The words are still there, yes, but the artwork amplifies those words. The way comics can stylize emotions and action is so intriguing, adding to the intensity of the story. And maybe the erotic work of art will get your engine running; That’s great too.

I suspect there are some stereotypes about comics that rival those about genre romance. At first glance, you might assume that racy comics show women with balloon-like breasts in inhuman positions. While these comics certainly exist, I want to bring you comics that explore sexuality in valid, sometimes even healthy ways. And note: I interpret ‘spicy books’ and ‘romantic books’ differently. These books generally have explicit sexual content in addition to romantic storylines.

There really are no limits to what can happen in comics or romance, so I’ve aimed these recommendations at readers of certain subgenres within romance. I’ve also focused on books published in print with English translations, because I know how much spirited book readers love physical media. Hopefully some of these can end up on your storage shelf.

Fresh romance by Janelle Asselin

If you’re just getting into comics, Fresh romance would be the perfect anthology to start with. These stories pay tribute to the romantic comics of yesteryear, but with a contemporary sensibility. These comics span genres from historical to paranormal and more. Each story has its own artistic style and spice levels vary throughout. And if a story catches your eye, you can look for that author/artist’s other work.

I started looking for truth and love by Alexis Bloem

Here’s one for the romance readers. Unfortunately, it is not currently available in print, although you can order collection ebooks in .pdf format. Or read the entire article online for free! This one is SPICY spicy. Cinder, an elf, and her best friend/semi-retired assassin Maeryll are on an adventure. By adventure I mean going naked in the woods. This story is lighthearted rather than violent, and it’s funny. It has all the magical weapons and forbidden scrolls you expect from a fantasy adventure novel, but with a pornographic twist.

If spirited book readers want to get into manga, josei is the type you might be looking for. It seems like a ‘new adult’ in romance. Josei titles can vary depending on how explicit the sex is, just like in romance. This title certainly contains nudity, but it is not a five chili pepper lecture. The story follows Mizuki, who has had no luck in male-dominated relationships. When she meets Shinomiya, who likes aggressive women, they begin a life-changing relationship with lots of sex and great communication.

If you looked Abbey in the centerDid you know that at this time in history, new ideas around gender, labor, sexuality, civil rights and more were bubbling up. Dick Fight Island from Reibun Ike

Sometimes you need a real bananas storyline, and that’s what you’re going to get Dick Fight Island. It’s about a tournament in which the last warrior to arrive is the winner. One of the warriors, recently returned from studying abroad, brings with him a new technique that could make him king of the islands. If a spicy series like Ice Planet Barbarians drew you in because it’s wild but also surprisingly sweet, Dick Fight Island is for you. But let’s be honest: you’ll know if this one is for you based on the title alone.

Spicy contemporary workplace romances are an abundant subgenre. Here’s a version of that in a comic strip. It’s essentially a friends-with-benefits-to-lovers story between two coworkers. Workaholic Fujii Sayo agrees to sleep with her flirty new co-worker, Kiriyama Ryouichi, until she finds someone she really wants. Of course, Ryouichi is convinced he’s the one. The sixth part of this comic will be released early next year, so you can catch up now.

Again, here’s one that you may or may not get from the title alone. But hear me out: the premise is great too! Student Asumi still holds the torch of her childhood love Mai. She heard that Mai works in a brothel. But it’s not like there’s a brothel guide to help Asumi find Mai. She will just have to visit brothels one by one. And those visits provide real character growth for Asumi. This one is as healthy as it is hot, and it’s very hot!

If you’re looking for a reasonably long, completed series, set Sweet pepper on your list. The comic follows Paprika, a young business woman in New York who is trying to find her way in her work life and her love life. You can also tell from the cover art that she is a devil. That angel behind her is the flirty delivery man she gets tangled up with. This soapy comic is for fans of messy girls and titles like Sex and the city And The devil wears Prada.

Here’s another anthology that harkens back to old romance comics, but this time it has to be gay. This book gives you the chance to meet pirates, ghosts, and kaiju (oh, my!). The stories in this collection are short, so if you like romance in snack format, this is the way to go. Then you can look to your favorite artists and writers for more work.

I want to emphasize again that these are comics aimed at adults! Almost all of these titles have sex depicted on the page, so I recommend them especially for spicy book lovers.
