No, Liz Truss did not blame the ‘trans mafia’ for the failure at the Tory conference

Liz Truss

It really says something that a satirical, unbelievable quote about transgender people, attributed to Liz Truss, is being mistaken as real by many people online. The former Prime Minister’s track record hardly offered her any defense, it must be said, but still…

A fake quote attributed to Truss blaming an “underground transgender mafia” for causing the end of her short-lived premiership in 2022 is the latest claim to make the rounds.

In a world where Donald Trump declares that Kamala Harris wants to conduct “transgender operations against illegal aliens,” it makes sense why many would believe the quote to be real, but it is about as true as the false quote given to the former Scottish Prime Minister is attributed. Nicola Sturgeon said the failed Prime Minister had “about as much use as a marzipan dildo”.

The idea of a clandestine criminal circuit of trans people operating in the halls of power at Westminster was shared by Political For You, an account on Prime Minister wants to leave cooperation with her behind.

“BREAKING 🚨🚨🚨,” the account read in a post on Monday (September 30), copying the style of major news alerts from official channels. “Liz Truss claims the ‘underground transgender mafia’ conspired against her and ended her leadership, (and that) they are the ones who really run this country.”

So far the post, which features a photo of Trump fan Truss at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham on Monday (September 30), has been viewed more than 1.6 million times, liked by more than 3,000 people and shared 2,500 times.

Unfortunately, as disappointing as it is to say, the quote is completely incorrect. However, Truss did speak at a side event during the conference and still managed to write down a long list of crazy things.

Speaking to Daily Telegraph columnist Tim Stanley, she claimed that if she had been in charge at the general election in July, the Conservatives would have done much better than they did under Rishi Sunak.

“When I was at number 10, Reform remained at three percent (in the polls),” she said. “By the time we got to the election, I think they got 18 percent because we promised change that we didn’t deliver.” She added that the party’s “best chance of winning would have been if Boris (Johnson) had been retained”.

Truss also said the next Tory leader must abolish the Equality Act and the Human Rights Act and clean up “the woke march on our institutions, the human rights culture embedded in government”.

Rather than endorsing either candidate for the post, Truss said she was a “big fan” of Javier Milei, Argentina’s right-wing president whose harsh austerity measures have pushed millions of his compatriots into poverty – and who is reported to have said his four dogs called themselves.

The fact that so many believe the quote is real is not entirely unexpected, given that Liz Truss previously blamed “trans activists” in the civil service for her disastrous premiership.

In February, she appeared at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), as did Nigel Farage and former White House strategist Steve Bannon, who was pardoned by Donald Trump in 2021 while awaiting trial on charges of bank fraud and money laundering.

She told the audience that she had suffered a “huge setback from the establishment” in Issue 10.

“There are people coming into the civil service who are essentially activists,” she claimed. “They may be trans activists, they may be environmental extremists, but they now have a voice within the civil service in a way that I don’t think was true 30 or 40 years ago.

“So we just have a whole new problem and, frankly, a hundred political appointees don’t even touch the parties when it comes to dealing with it.”

Before that, she described supporters of LGBTQ+ people as “left-wing extremists” and expressed support for banning trans women from single-sex spaces and passing laws that would prevent transgender youth from transitioning.

Over time we recommend Liz Truss could still blame that underground trans mafia for something…
