Baltimore teacher who filmed sex with student learns his fate in federal prison

William Zev Steen, 46, was sentenced to 23 years in prison followed by life parole after pleading guilty to sexual exploitation of a child.

Steen has since been fired as a STEM teacher at the Orthodox Jewish girls’ school Bnos Yisroel in Baltimore. Him later to let go of other positions he held also in the community.

According to his plea agreement, Steen sexually abused a minor victim between 2005 and 2011, from the time she was 2 until she was 8 years old, and recorded at least two of those instances in 2008, when the girl was 5.

Steen also admitted that he collected and shared files depicting the sexual abuse of prepubescent minors using a peer-to-peer file sharing network as recently as 2022.

The files documenting his abuse of the minor were also on his digital devices when he was arrested in November 2022, days afterward. is released after an arrest for child pornography crimes.

Steen became the focus of an investigation after he was linked to websites that shared child pornography online, state police said. A search of his laptop and external hard drive revealed he had “numerous” child pornography files that he could not delete.

Steen’s LinkedIn profile says he is the CEO of MirageID, an identity tracking company. He was also heavily involved with TAG (Technology Awareness Group) Baltimore, which “provides 20 hours of free guidance on device selection, step-by-step filter installations and live technical support,” according to its website.

TAG announced that they had terminated Steen after he was indicted, but did not provide a reason.

“We are shocked and saddened to have to write and share this letter,” school officials previously said. “It is important to recognize that this traumatic experience provides an opportunity to have a conversation with your child about personal safety.
