Britain exposes father and son at the center of the Evil Corp hacking group

Britain, the United States and Australia have announced sanctions against 16 people accused by authorities of being part of the world’s most wanted cybercrime gang.

Russia-based Evil Corp is accused of stealing around $300 million through hacking over the past decade.

Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) can now reveal that the gang’s infamous leader, Maxim Yakubec, was supported by his father, Viktor Yakubec. He denied this in a 2021 interview with the BBC.

The information was released as part of a larger, multinational operation to disrupt Evil Corp and another infamous hacking group called LockBit.

Evil Corp is known for its mafia-like operations and has been waging destructive cyberattack campaigns worldwide for more than a decade.

In 2019, Maksim Yakubets was sanctioned and arrested along with another man named Igor Turashev, and a reward of $5 million was imposed on them.

Other Russian individuals, including Yakubets’ brother Artem, have also been listed as part of the US sanctions and directions.

In 2021, the BBC traveled to Russia to hear gang stories and sought out and interviewed gang members.

In Maksim Yakubets’ former home we found his father passionately defending his son and insisting that he was personally innocent.

But the NCA has now revealed that the Yakubec senior was a key member of a cybercrime group, accusing him of helping the gang launder some of the stolen money.
