Tinubu government wins war against insecurity - minister insists

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Guidance, Mohammed Idris, has reiterated that the incumbent government is winning the war against insecurity.

He says the country’s security remains a top priority in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.

Naija News reports that Idris made the comment on Thursday in Abuja during the first international conference organized by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), titled “Interrogating the root cause of violence in the Sahel and its impact on the territorial integrity of Nigeria.”

The event united experts, policymakers and key stakeholders to assess and propose strategies to overcome the obstacles posed by violence in the Sahel region.

In his speech, Idris said Tinubu was committed to addressing the problematic state of insecurity in the country by increasing investments in technology, human resources and intelligence gathering.

The minister acknowledged that the Sahel region has turned into a center of unrest, violence, terrorism, organized crime, drug trafficking, arms smuggling and violent extremism, with significant implications for Nigeria due to the country’s porous borders with the region.

“Nigeria shares a long and porous border with several Sahelian countries embroiled in conflict, making us vulnerable to the spillover effects of the conflict. This not only threatens our security, but also challenges our ability to maintain effective control of our border.

“Several scholars and experts have previously attributed these challenges to socio-economic marginalization, weak governance structures, environmental degradation and climate change, transnational organized crime and illicit arms trafficking, but the spillover effect of these conflicts is taking its toll on our economy. internal security and the socio-economic well-being of our people”, said Idris.

No country can tackle insecurity alone

According to Idris, no country can tackle the issue of insecurity on its own.

Furthermore, the Minister of Information said that the fundamental reasons behind violence in the Sahel, such as economic exclusion, inadequate governance systems, ecological problems and criminal networks, are significant.

However, he said the federal government is committed to addressing these fundamental problems, both within the country and in collaboration with global allies.

He said: “The violence in the Sahel is not an isolated incident and no country can tackle it alone. Therefore, Nigeria has stepped up its engagement with its neighbors and other regional and international partners and is strengthening joint military operations such as the Multinational Joint Task Force and also supporting initiatives aimed at stabilizing the Sahel region.

“On the home front, security has remained a top priority in President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, and through investments in equipment, manpower, acquisition of more combat platforms and intelligence gathering, we are winning the war against insecurity.

“Addressing these challenges would require collaboration among government agencies, international partners and security experts to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity and contribute to lasting peace and stability in the Sahel region.

Idris urged the specialists gathered at the summit to thoroughly investigate the underlying reasons behind the armed conflicts in the Sahel, with the aim of creating breakthrough approaches to tackle the obstacles.

The NAN inaugural lecture was attended by key stakeholders from both national and international levels, including former Head of State, General Abdulsalam Abubakar, who chaired the event, and Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, who delivered the keynote speech.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was the guest of honor at the summit, was represented by the National Security Advisor, Malam Nuhu Ribadu.

Other distinguished guests included the Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa; the Governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Umar Dikko Radda; the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, and the Minister of Steel Development, Alhaji Shuaibu Abubakar.
