Cannes Palme d’Or 2024 Winner ‘Anora’ Closes MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024

The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival is excited to announce that this year The closing film is Anoradirected by Sean Baker. The film will premiere in South Asia October 24, 2024, the last day of the festivalproviding a spectacular conclusion to a line-up packed with world-class cinema.

Since its debut at the Festival de Canneswhere it harvested the prized Palm d’OrAnora has captivated the audience. The film, distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery in India, combines Baker’s signature empathy for marginalized characters with drama, telling the story of Ani (Mikey Madison), a Brooklyn sex worker embroiled in the Russian mafia.

Baker, who previously served as Head of Jury for the International Competitions section at MAMI in 2018, continues his exploration of marginalized and often overlooked individuals in society, a theme evident in his previous works such as Mandarine And The Florida Project.

Anu Rangachar, Head of International Programming at MAMI, expressed his excitement about the festival’s closing film, saying: “It is a fitting tribute to close the festival with one of MAMI’s most beloved alumni, Sean Baker, and its Cannes Palme d’Or winner, Anora. This film serves as a sharp critique of wealth, privilege, and the American dream, brought to life by Mikey Madison’s stellar performance.

Scheduled from October 19 to October 24, 2024the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival promises a vibrant six-day celebration of global cinema, community, creativity and culture. Featuring over 110 films in over 50 languages, including feature and non-feature films across genres, the festival aims to bring cinematic excellence back to the heart of Mumbai.
