SCOTUS hears Mexico’s lawsuit against U.S. gun makers

The Supreme Court has decided to decide whether the Mexican government can sue major U.S. gun manufacturers for fueling drug cartel violence south of the border. The justices announced Friday that they will hear the gunmakers’ challenge to an appeals court ruling that would allow the unusual $10 billion lawsuit to move forward in federal court in Boston.

Mexico states in its lawsuit that more than half a million firearms per year, made in the US, end up in Mexico and often end up with drug cartels. The illegal flow of weapons is undermining Mexico’s strict gun laws, the indictment alleges.

The lawsuit, which targets major U.S. gun manufacturers including Smith & Wesson, Glock, Colt and Beretta, alleges that the companies’ distribution, sales and marketing practices encourage sales to so-called “straw” buyers, who often sell the guns bring them to Mexico or deliver them to others who do.
