Job description

The role of Manager, Institutional Funding and Partnership is designed to oversee a team of Development Officers, provide leadership and guidance in acquiring and cultivating meaningful donor relationships, and direct fundraising efforts of U.S. foundations. You also act as an external representative of Oxfam and serve as a source of knowledge.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Accounts Team (SAT) Management and People Management (40%):

  • Leading the Strategic Accounts Team (SAT). Maintain an overview of all donor submissions and awards and monitor opportunity pipeline data and key performance indicators. Refine SAT scope of work, objectives and team structure as necessary to reflect the current market.
  • Directly oversee a team of Development Officers, including their pipeline and portfolios.
  • Manage team growth and performance, including identifying, hiring, leading, motivating, coaching, problem solving and developing talent to nurture a high-functioning institutional finance and partnership team.
  • Proposal support and report submission by SAT staff, including providing quality assurance on funding proposals developed by program teams and direct proposal assistance as requested.

Optimize relationships with existing, valuable donors (40%):

  • Acts as an external representative of Oxfam and participates in meetings, conferences and events to establish new donor relationships.
  • Focus on maintaining and expanding relationships with major donors to the foundation, with the goal of generating 6 and 7 figure grants. Develop a strategy in consultation with the director and implement it to direct reports.
  • Manage relationships with assigned donors, including developing and implementing three-year donor account plans for priority accounts.
  • Working closely with program and policy staff to cultivate and manage Oxfam’s relationships with strategic donors.
  • Manage and execute activities related to prospecting, cultivation, recruitment and stewardship. Write and/or edit proposals, reports, budgets, budget narratives, cover letters, contact reports, briefings, talking points and related materials, as necessary to support fundraising strategies. Undertake donor-related travel, as appropriate for meetings, site visits and conferences.
  • Identify areas of mutual strategic interest between strategic institutional donors and Oxfam programs and work with program/policy officers and others to make programs and initiatives more marketable to new and former donors.
  • Continually build better knowledge of the confederation and Oxfam America’s program portfolios, especially the evolving trends in the philanthropic marketplace and which program design features are most competitive.

Work with the IFP team, affiliate and confederation to maximize performance (20%):

  • Provide strategic direction to the IFP team through participation in the IFP Senior Leadership Team.
  • Lead or find support for high-quality proposals in the IFP team.
  • Work with IFP sub-team leaders (New Business Development (NBD), Operations and Corporate) to identify ways to maximize revenue and efficiency.
  • Liaise with the Executive Office and program leadership in pursuing institutional partnerships through which Oxfam could receive sub-awards.
  • Stay abreast of trends in U.S. foundation giving and serve as a knowledge resource for staff.
  • Proactively update donor information in Salesforce or a similar CRM and ensure direct reports update Salesforce as necessary.

Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in a field related to writing, communications, political science, or international development, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum 5+ related progressive experience with at least 5 or more years of successful fundraising with major US foundation donors.
  • Demonstrated experience managing, leading and coaching a team, preferably in a unionized environment, and external partners.
  • Experience launching new teams, strategies and portfolios.
  • Superior writing, oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to build positive relationships with donors, staff, board members and volunteers of U.S. foundations; excellent listening and motivation skills.
  • Strong time management, problem-solving, organizational, planning and administrative skills, including comfort with various information systems, and fluency with Microsoft Suite and databases.
  • Ability to manage complex proposal development processes with multiple applicants and interlocking budgets.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity, work independently and under pressure, prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles and practices as they relate to U.S. foundations.
  • Knowledge of budget construction and interpretation with limited funding.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to communicate in French or Spanish.
  • Experience in a problem-oriented non-profit organization or in an international development organization.
