Jharkhand: Court orders CBI to probe alleged ‘nexus’ between police and coal mafia related to coal theft in Dhanbad

RANCHI: The Jharkhand High Court in a landmark judgment on Thursday, October 3, said that the allegations leveled by the petitioner regarding the nexus between the coal mafia and the police in Dhanbad are fit to be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) .

The court made these observations while hearing a petition filed by a journalist who alleged through his petition that one of the officials was hand in glove with the coal mafia. According to the reports, the said police officer is also facing other charges for which he has been taken into custody.

A bench of Justice Sanjay Dwivedi, in its order, directed the CBI to take over the investigation into the allegations labeled by the journalist, asserting that the case is fit to be probed by the Union probe agency.

While pronouncing the judgment, Justice Dwivedi further said that the petition filed by the state government after reserving the order in the case is also unwarranted. The case involves allegations of illegal mining and sale of coal through a nexus between the coal mafia and the said police officer.

Meanwhile, Babu Lal Marandi, former chief minister of the state, welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to transfer the probe to the CBI and alleged that despite raising objections to the posting of certain officials, a conspiracy had been hatched for a major scam in Dhanbad. . This led to enormous financial losses for the state treasury. An impartial and detailed investigation into this scam was necessary.

Marandi further accused the incumbent chief minister, Hemant Soren, of ruining the state’s economy. He also questioned the state government’s handling of the case and warned the government to take immediate action against the accused officials.

Speaking to the media, the BJP stalwart further recalled that the Bharatiya Janata party functionaries have been raising their voice against illegal mining and theft of coal in Dhanbad for long. “I had also written a letter to the CM regarding the same,” Marandi added.
