• A week after Hurricane Helene roared through, the smell of death overpowers the cool mountain air over the isolated twisting roads of devastated rural western North Carolina. Buncombe County has reported at least 72 deaths, the most in the state. Here’s how you can help.
• Communities in Florida are being urged to prepare for a potential Category 3 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico just days after Hurricane Helene made landfall in the state. Tropical Storm Milton is expected to intensify quickly.

• The Supreme Court let stand Biden administration rules that would cut emissions of the planet-warming gas methane as well as mercury in a rare win for an environmental regulation pending before the conservative high court.

Monday
October 7 marks one year since the Hamas-led assault in southern Israel when militants killed 1,200 people and took more than 250 people hostage, leading to Israel’s war in Gaza and strikes in Lebanon.

CBS News will air its “60 Minutes” election special, but only one presidential candidate will be featured after former President Donald Trump backed out of a previously scheduled interview. Trump had committed to the interview first, followed by Vice President Kamala Harris, through campaign spokespeople, CBS said. CBS disclosed Trump’s change of plans a few hours before the network hosted a vice presidential debate between Ohio Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz last week.

And the first Monday in October means the Supreme Court begins a new term with new disputes dealing with discrimination, the storage of spent nuclear fuel and DNA testing for a death row inmate. The court also will decide whether a federal law prevents Mexico from suing gun distributors for allegedly facilitating the flow of firearms to drug cartels.

(Editor’s note: No actual “krabs” will be harmed in the making of the meal. It’s just a regular cheeseburger but with an additional slice of cheese and a “top-secret” Krabby Kollab sauce, Wendy’s says.)

Thursday
Elon Musk is set to unveil Tesla’s autonomous robotaxi. Tesla has dubbed the event in Los Angeles “We, Robot” — a play on Isaac Asimov’s collection of science fiction short stories.
