SMALLVILLE Star Tom Welling Shares the Touching Reason Why He’d Want to Wear Superman’s Suit on Screen (Exclusive)

Tom Welling’s ten-year journey as Smallville‘s Clark Kent ended in 2011. In the series finale, the long-running “no flights, no tights” rule was finally dropped and we got to see Welling as Superman… from a distance.

The actor has now explained this Smallville was always Clark’s story in his eyes, which made him reluctant to wear the hero’s iconic costume for the entire episode. The final shot naturally saw Clark rip open his shirt to reveal the iconic emblem, and both Welling and Lex Luthor actor Michael Rosenbaum are keen to continue Smallville‘s story with an animated revival.

The CWs Crisis on Infinite Earths In the crossover, Welling once again played the role of a powerless Superman, which meant that the actor didn’t get a chance to adapt there either.

Last week we spoke to the actor about his action-packed badass role in Mafia wars. In the closing moments of our conversation, we asked Welling if he has changed his stance on wearing Superman’s suit should the opportunity arise.

“You know, I think now, because of the two boys I have with my lovely wife… we have a lot of costumes at home,” he tells us in the video above. “It started the first Halloween and now we have, I don’t know, forty or fifty costumes. The only costume we don’t have is the Superman costume.”

“I asked my son why and he said, ‘Because he was taken’ and I said, ‘By who?’ “By (you).” That was like, “Okay, I think I’m open to the idea now.” So if you know someone, it would be great to be a part of it.”

In response to the negative response to The flashit’s unlikely that DC Studios wants to tell another Multiverse story. But given how popular revivals of hit TV shows have become in recent years, there’s really no reason to think Welling couldn’t get another chance one day.

Fans want it to happen and James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, seems to have his finger on the pulse in that regard.

We’ll share our full interview with Welling and his co-star Cher Cosenza later this week. If you’d rather not wait for the full written transcript, you can watch our chat with Tom above.
