Pakistan’s pioneering water-sucking wells are game-changing for drought-affected communities

There is a serious shortage of clean water for daily use in Pakistan and water is often stolen and given to the tanker mafia through fire hydrants. And for this purpose, millions of liters of water are extracted from the ground every day.

Pakistan is one of the countries facing severe water shortage. According to experts, the water crisis in the country will become much more serious if underground water resources are used to the same extent and in the same quantity.

Experts say that to avoid this situation, it is necessary to regularly refill the underground water reservoirs.

Groundwater recharge means that when water is extracted from the ground, it is also returned to the empty space. The faster method of supplying water is called “borewell refill”.

And an effective method to recharge the underground water reservoirs is the “suction well”.

Actually ‘Recharge Well’ in Urdu is called ‘Pani Chos Kanwan’. This translation was made by Zafar Iqbal Watto, an expert on water resources and a renowned researcher.

Speaking to the German news agency “Deutsche Welle”, he said that a water intake well is a system created to mix rainwater with underground water. There are aquifers underground that need to be drained by rainwater to recharge them. Water cannot penetrate through the hard top layer of the earth and the cement or tar floor. That is why wells are dug in the course of the watercourse or natural flow, allowing the water to reach the ground. They are called water-sucking springs.

He said such wells have layers of sand or pebbles that do not block the passage of water. The rainwater is drained using small aqueducts where a well is already present. Rainwater is first cleaned using sand, gravel and other filter material and then slowly seeps into the ground.

Another important function of water suction wells is to protect the protected rainwater from waste and pollution.

If rainwater doesn’t go into the ground, it becomes floodwater or gets mixed with sewage and turns into poison.

The earth has its own system, it cleans the rainwater and gives it to us, but when the sewage goes in, the natural system cannot bear the load. So we need to reclaim the land without polluting rainwater, for which water extraction wells are the best source.
