Paetongtarn explains her vision on ‘collective leadership’ within the region

Human security: Thailand proposes cooperation within ASEAN to address all crises and ensure people have access to food, energy and basic needs. In addition to sustainable agriculture, ASEAN must also promote smart agriculture to build a strong foundation for long-term food production and security in the region. Strengthening ASEAN’s energy framework, such as connecting ASEAN’s power grids, would enhance regional energy resilience, Paetongtarn said.

In addition, promoting water management and increasing capabilities to fight transnational crime, especially online scams, call center gangs and drug trafficking, were crucial. Thailand is pushing for stricter border controls to tackle these challenges, she said.

Deeper Regional Integration: Paetongtarn expressed support for ASEAN’s efforts to update and improve its free trade agreements with dialogue partners. While Thailand chairs the negotiations on the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement, the country aims to conclude these talks by 2025 to create new mechanisms for economic growth in ASEAN. Promoting digital skills development for SMEs will increase access to finance and promote growth in today’s volatile global economy, she said.
