Your Honor, the newly appointed head of the Border Command, Martin Hewitt – we wish him well – said that deterrence

“will always be part of the… picture”.

The Irish government said the previous government’s Rwanda plan was an effective deterrent, which was of course a goal stated in the bill. Does the Minister agree that the tearing up of the Rwanda Act and Treaty, given the continued arrivals this summer, the apparent lack of returns or new agreements, the frequent tragic events in the Channel and the apparent lack of any deterrent, maybe a little rash?
