No one wants to die It feels like you’re watching a Netflix crime show

Story Highlights

  • The cinematography and the realistic and subtle lighting complete it stand out from other games where you only see light.
  • The soothing voice-over, the 1940s background music and the relaxed atmosphere of the game relax to the core.
  • The complex characters, compelling story and funny banter during the game make this game fun to play.

Nobody Wants To Die is a recent release that lets you investigate a murder in a cyberpunk-esque world. However, the plot and atmosphere go far beyond any other game.

Cinematic presentation

The game takes place in a dystopian, futuristic, cyberpunk-esque world in New York in 2392. Yes, that’s far from our time, but this game portrays it effectively. You get to see research facilities and high-tech laboratories, which enhances the sci-fi feel of the game.

Compelling voice-over

You are immediately greeted with a soothing voiceover from both characters. Even though the music sounds like it comes from the 1940s, you don’t hear any old accents. Our character’s voice-over acting is so soothing that you would want to listen to it for hours.

Throughout the game, our character and Sara, our fellow detective who is constantly on the phone, have funny back-and-forth conversations, which are hilarious and make you feel like you’re watching a real Netflix TV show.

Incredible lighting

The lighting in this game is meant to be very realistic so it doesn’t fall over your face all the time. It’s like a breath of fresh air since the cyberpunk genre is filled with overly lit games.

The lighting and reflections are subtle, and their simplistic nature makes this game stand out. However, this game seems boring at times, with blacks being blacker than other games, which is similar to the setting in Batman games.

Music from the 40s

There is music constantly playing in the background, resembling a nostalgic 1940s synthwave soundtrack. However, the music changes to a more cinematic music whenever there is a cutscene.

The music also changes dynamically to match the tension of the scene, from calm, ambient tracks during exploration to intense, pulsating beats during high-stakes investigations. All this makes you feel like you’re watching an expensive Netflix movie or series.

Atmospheric environment

This game features tall skyscrapers, neon-lit streets and a constant downpour, all of which create an extremely relaxing atmosphere. The sound is muffled when you are in your car, and it feels like a wonderful moment to sit in the car and hear raindrops in the distance.

Cinematography

This is not just a game made on Unreal Engine 5, but uses various cinematic techniques. Before a cutscene, black bars appear at the top and bottom of your screen, enhancing the scene by 10 points.

Our player smokes through the screen and the cigarette lights up so incredibly well that it almost feels real. Similarly, our character uses the camera’s eyepiece by bringing it closer to his eyes, which is the screen, and switches to camera mode. I like this little detail.

Compelling story

Like a well-made Netflix show, this six-hour game offers a storyline that allows you to relax and enjoy the show. Even though there are puzzles in this game, you don’t have to use your brain all the time.

The Hook

This game starts with a twist from the beginning. You’re sitting in a car with your partner, watching a movie from what looks like a drive-by theater from the past. Suddenly your body aches and you are surrounded by power lines in your car.

You swallow your medicine and turn around to see that your partner has disappeared. You swing open the gate and see that you are floating hundreds of meters above the ground, in your futuristic car next to the roof of tall skyscrapers.

Mix of the past with the future

Some games like The Mafia: Definitive Edition and Read Dead Redemption 2 are based solely on the old period. However, some games, such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Bladerunner, are purely focused on the future.

However, Nobody Wants To Die differs from the other games because it combines the two time periods. The environment is set in the future, but the vehicles, music and films are from the 1940s.

Research techniques

You can examine the victim’s body with your futuristic device, which can recreate the series of events that led to the crime right before your eyes. This way you can piece together the evidence to solve the mystery. There are also a few choices that affect the ending of the story, and all four endings are incredible.
