Two police officers killed, one injured after cartel attack

SAN LUIS, Mexico (KYMA, KECY) – Two police officers are dead and one is injured after an attack by a drug cartel group in San Luis, Mexico.

This comes after the mayor announced the “100 Days of Safety,” which will see more military and police officers patrolling the streets.

The incident happened around 6:00 p.m. Thursday in the area of ​​Carranza Avenue and Fifth Street, where an armed cartel group fired shots at the officers’ unit, killing two of them on the spot while one officer was wounded.

Elisa Uribe, a local woman, said she was shocked by what she saw across the street from where she lives.

“The agents are working. They are doing their job and they are exposing themselves. We know it and there is nothing we can do about it,” Uribe said.

The injured officer was reported in critical condition and was transported to a hospital in the US

In a brief statement, the Sonora prosecutor said several people have already been arrested in connection with the case.

Meanwhile, local residents hope the wave of violence will soon end so they can live in peace again.

“I hope it’s over. I hope it’s over because sometimes you can’t even go to work,” Uribe shared.

The case is still under investigation by the Sonora Public Prosecutor’s Office. Funerals for the officers who died will be held after the investigation is completed.
