Peoria City Soccer wins first playoff game

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — The Carp earn their first-ever postseason victory.

Peoria City scored twice in the second half and goalkeeper Samy Slimi kept Thunder Bay off the scoreboard in a 2-0 victory in the opening round of the USL2 playoffs at Shea Stadium on Friday.

Jose Gomez Ortiz scored from a free kick in the 55th minute and Lucas Persenico added a goal in the 73rd minute to give the Carp the first playoff victory in franchise history.

Peoria City hosts Des Moines on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the second round of the playoffs. The Menace defeated Bavarian United 2-0 to advance.
