Celebrate National Ice Cream Day with these Springfield specials

Sunday is National Ice Cream Day and if you’re looking for something sweet, you can visit the local ice cream parlors in Springfield.

According to the International Dairy Foods Association, former President Ronald Reagan declared July National Ice Cream Month in 1984 and the third Sunday of the month National Ice Cream Day.

“Ice cream is a nutritious and healthful food, enjoyed by more than 90 percent of the people in the United States,” Reagan said in his proclamation. “It has a reputation as the perfect dessert and snack.”

While ice cream may not be considered “nutritious” these days, it’s no secret that Americans enjoy a sweet frozen treat. In 2023, the country’s ice cream industry had an impact of $11.4 billion on the economy, directly supporting more than 27,000 jobs, according to IDFA. That’s kept ice cream makers busy, with more than 1.3 billion gallons of ice cream produced in 2023.

Earlier this year, IDFA teamed up with Morning Consult to survey Americans about their favorite ice cream flavors. According to the survey, the top 10 ice cream flavors are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, butter pecan, cookie dough, cookies and cream, mint chocolate chip, chocolate chip, rocky road, and peanut butter cup.
