ESPN’s Paul Finebaum says another ACC team is more attractive to SEC and Big 10 than FSU

After reports surfaced that the Big Ten and SEC aren’t interested in adding Florida State to their ranks (unless the ACC implodes), ESPN radio host and SEC legend Paul Finebaum made an interesting proposal that could cause a stir in Tallahassee.

First, he said both Clemson and FSU worked closely together to leave the ACC.

“Clemson, and Florida State in particular, have made a lot of noise. Florida State just cheated about a year ago and said it was too good, basically, my word, not theirs, for the ACC. Clemson has been a draft partner. But there doesn’t seem to be any interest in either the Big Ten or the SEC for them right now,” Finebaum said.

That doesn’t mean the “Power Two” conferences wouldn’t try to expand despite overlooking FSU and Clemson, though. According to Finebaum, a school from the Tar Heel State would be the preferred option.

“I think the real school to watch if the ACC starts to show cracks is the University of North Carolina. Both the Big Ten and the SEC, I think, would listen if Chapel Hill came calling, and then the question is who else would come with them from the ACC,” Finebaum said.

The ESPN host’s statement remains consistent with his comments from late June, in which he questioned Florida State’s ability to lure the Big Ten’s big names. He then went on to state that FSU “thinks they’re in high demand” and “they don’t fit the Big Ten model.”

Time will tell.
