Newcastle United management are already at odds over the £30million player Paul Mitchell wants to sign

Newcastle United’s summer transfer window has yet to really get going as the Magpies await their first big appearance.

Eddie Howe’s patience may be tested as he prepares his team for next week’s trip to Asia without making any major changes to his squad.

The Toon clubs are seen as the richest owners in the football world, but they are struggling to convert that money into action now that PSR is active.

Newcastle have the choice of the free agent Lloyd Kelly and a number of selection options.

However, the appointment of Paul Mitchell will be seen as a major boost to the club’s recruitment process given his stunning record.

But it appears the club and Mitchell have already had an initial disagreement over one of the players the technical director has advised them to sign.

Newcastle not convinced by transfer target Paul Mitchell

When the transfer window opened last month, Newcastle were concerned they would not adhere to the PSR.

The Toon had to say goodbye to the young Elliot Anderson, a departure that did not go down well with Howe.

And in return, fans have seen the likes of Kelly, John Ruddy, Odysseas Vlachodimos and most recently Miodrag Pivas come through the doors at St James’ Park.

Since his arrival, Mitchell is said to have done everything he could to persuade Newcastle to sign Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo.

But according to Alex Crook, the £30million Todibo player is not necessarily a player who has convinced everyone on Tyneside.

“Newcastle, I understand on good authority, have been in discussions this week, led by Paul Mitchell, the new sporting director,” Crook told TalkSPORT.

“At the moment I don’t think Todibo will end up at St James’ Park, I’m not entirely convinced the management team wants to go in that direction, so it’s interesting that Paul Mitchell is already moving the club in a slightly different direction.”

Newcastle are in dire need of another centre-back

The story of Newcastle’s 2023/24 season has been marred by injury, with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles suffering major setbacks.

Both centre-backs are recovering from serious injuries and are expected to miss the start of the season.

Kelly has already been brought in, but Howe will undoubtedly want to bring in more players, perhaps even with a statement signing.

Malick Thiaw is a player Newcastle are really interested in, but time flies before the Toon make a signing before they head to Japan.
