Fry’s tops the Phoenix metro for best grocery sales. Here’s the list

The Phoenix metropolitan grocery market is dominated by Fry’s Food Stores, which is looking to increase its market share as Fry’s parent company, Ohio-based Kroger Co., negotiates to acquire Safeway and Albertsons stores.

According to research from Chain Store Guide, Fry’s Food Stores has 93 locations in Maricopa and Pinal counties. In 2023, the company generated nearly $5.6 billion in sales in the market, easily topping the list and holding a 28.32% market share compared to its closest competitor, Arkansas-based Walmart, which generated $3.5 billion in sales and held a 17.83% market share.

  3. Costco Wholesale, market share 11.81%
  4. Safeway, market share 9.87%
  5. Bashas’ Inc., including Food City and AJ’s Fine Foods, market share of 5.63%
  6. Target, market share of 4.18%
  7. Albertsons, 4.02% market share
  8. Sprouts Farmers Markets, 3.40% market share
  9. Sam’s Club, 3.36% market share
  10. WinCo Foods, market share 2.24%
  11. Walmart Neighborhood Market, 1.68% market share
  12. Trader Joe’s, 1.53% market share
  13. Los Altos Ranch Market, 1.19% Market Share
  14. Whole Foods Market, 1.06% market share
  15. El Super, 0.82% market share
